John F. Perkins
CUSHING - Funeral services for John F. Perkins, 92, of Cushing will be Saturday February 8th at 2pm at the Dickie Allen Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Myrtle Springs Cemetery outside of New Summerfield. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the funeral home. Mr. Perkins died February 1st, 2020 in Cushing, Texas. He was born December 29th, 1927 in Ponta, Texas.
John was born and raised in the Ponta, Texas area. He graduated from Rusk high School. In 1949 he began work for K Wolens, a chain of dry goods stores in East Texas. He was a good salesman and was sent to different stores in East Texas to sell men's suits until he was made manager of the Crockett K Wolens. He worked there for many years until the K Wolens chain was sold. His three children spent their early childhoods in Crockett.
Throughout his life John was involved with horses. He rode bareback in rodeos as a young man, and raised, traded and sold horses all his life. He enjoyed trail rides and made many friends that way.
John served as the Crockett Lion's Club president for several years. He helped establish the Crockett Lion's Club Rodeo.
John was a faithful Christian. He attended Grace Street church of Christ for many years, donating the land on which the church was built and serving as the church treasurer. After he and Teena were married in June of 2000, he attended Cushing Church of Christ, serving as the church treasurer there also until Parkinson's disease rendered him unable to do so.
John enjoyed playing dominoes and "42"and served as president of the Cushing 42 Club for several years. He also enjoyed basketball and played on the Rusk High School team. As an adult he would often drive long distances to see his favorite college teams play. In his later years he enjoyed watching NBA games on television, especially the Dallas Mavericks and Golden State Warriors.
John was an avid fan of old country music, especially Ray Price. He was constantly promoting his wife, Teena's, singing.
John lived a full life, but he was tired and unable to do most of the things he loved anymore. He was ready to go to his Heavenly Home.
He is preceded in death by his daughter Judy Perkins; brothers T.O. Perkins, Augustus Perkins, Valentine, Terry, O.R., Edwin, Frank; sisters Dorothy Burton and Diamond Sewell; He is survived by his wife Teena Perkins of Cushing, TX; daughter Janis Perkins of Dallas; son Jon Perkins of Dallas; sister Daisy Masch and Husband Johnny of Denton, TX; 6 step children; sister-in-law Melba Perkins of Flint, Texas; grandson Hudson Perkins and 12 step grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Wade Ray, Cary McMahon, Brady Shirley, Hudson Perkins, Tim Sewell, Mike Sewell, Jonathan Clark, Don Perkins. Honorary Pallbearers will be Jeff Barnhart, Cecil Miles, Dick Kirkendal, Leon Flanagan, Dwight Partin, Nelson Burton, and Barry Davidson
