Jacquelyn Browning Obituary

Jacquelyn Odom (Mrs. Gus) Browning, died January 30, 2025. A memorial service will be held at noon on April 5 at First United Methodist Church, 1031 SE Loop 456, Jacksonville, TX. Private burial will be at Providence Cemetery, Dialville, TX.

Jackie graduated from Jacksonville, TX high school as Valedictorian in 1945 and from Lon Morris College in 1947 where she received the Founder's Award as Most Outstanding Student. She appeared in many dramas at Lon Morris and won Best Actress in State in the junior college one act play contest. She also sang in the Lon Morris Sextette and travelled with them and the college president, Dr. Cecil Peeples, all over East Texas. She received the Distinguished Alumni award from Lon Morris in 1993.

She met her husband, Rev. Dr. Gus Browning, at the Methodist student center at UT - Austin from which she graduated in 1949 with a BFA degree in Speech & Drama. She taught school for four years while her husband was employed in Houston and was in seminary at SMU in Dallas.

During her husband's 40-year career as a United Methodist Church minister, she sang in church choirs and in community choirs such as the Bay Area Chorus in the Houston area, and served in many church roles as Sunday School teacher; director of children, youth, and adult choirs; organist and pianist; and director of church dramas. She also volunteered in numerous community organizations including Boy and Girl Scouts, children's development programs, the IHN program for homeless families, and taught English as a Second Language classes.

She was an avid tennis player and loved hiking in Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado, where she twice climbed 14,259' Longs Peak. Her favorite activity in her later years was playing with her grandchildren.

She and Gus were tour hosts on several Methodist Heritage tours in England as well as other tours in Europe and lived in The Netherlands for eight months while he was Interim Pastor at The American Protestant Church of The Hague. They also travelled to many other countries including 30 Elderhostel and Road Scholar programs in the U.S. and participated in three mission projects in Belize and El Salvador.

Jackie is survived by her four children and five grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Gus & Jackie Browning Benevolent Fund or the Allie Mae and Carlton Odom Scholarship Fund at the Texas Methodist Foundation, 11709 Boulder Lane, Austin, TX 78726.
