Alan Mather Obituary

Jacksonville - Alan Thomas Mather, lovingly known to many as "Big Al," passed away peacefully on February 25, 2026, in Jacksonville, Texas, at the age of 81. He was born July 8, 1944, in Albion, Michigan, to the late George Vincent and Marjorie Joyce (Harding) Mather.

A private memorial service will be held by the family, with arrangements under the direction of Autry Funeral Home.

For generations across East Texas, Big Al's unmistakable voice was more than just sound - it was a familiar and comforting presence woven into daily life. His rich tone and warm personality filled the airwaves for decades as a dedicated radio broadcaster. He lent his voice to countless local advertisements and became a beloved and recognizable DJ for the Tops in Texas Rodeo, where his energy and passion brought excitement to audiences year after year.

Alan devoted many meaningful years to KEBE/KOOI Radio, where his talent, professionalism, and tireless work ethic made him a cornerstone of the station. During his long career with Waller Broadcasting, he rose to the role of Production Manager, helping shape programming and guide the station forward with creativity, leadership, and heart.

Though his professional voice reached far and wide, Alan's most treasured roles were found at home. He was a proud and affectionate "Granddaddy" and later "G daddy" to many - titles he carried with deep joy, humor, and boundless love. For 50 devoted years, he shared life with his beloved wife, Ruth, building a marriage grounded in laughter, partnership, and unwavering devotion. He will be remembered not only for his booming voice, but for the kindness, love, and steady presence he gave so freely to his family and the community he served so faithfully.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Ann Mather, and his grandson, Joshua Dowdy.

Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 50 years, Ruth Mather; daughters Karen Kennedy and husband Randal of Whitehouse, Tracy Green and husband Craig of Michigan, and Princess Tillman of Lindale; son Haig Black and wife Carla of Michigan; brother Lyle Mather of Michigan; grandchildren Ryan Fade and wife Jesica, Taylor Epperson, Amanda Foley and husband Mike, Casey Flannery and husband Justin, Tyler George and wife Kylene, Jeremy Black and wife Autumn, Kaitlyn Keck and husband Sean, Jared Black and wife Alyssa, and Preston Scott; along with numerous great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of customary condolences, the family requests that donations be made in Alan's memory to the ASPCA at www.aspca.org.
