Mickey's Story

A funeral service for Mickey Luce, age 80, of Overton, formerly of Jacksonville, is scheduled at 2 o'clock in the afternoon Friday, July 22, 2016, at Autry Funeral Home Chapel in Jacksonville. Pastor Keith Anderson will officiate. Luce will be laid to rest at Providence Cemetery.
He passed away in his home Sunday, July 17, 2016.
Mickey was born January 23, 1936, in Maydelle to John Thomas and Jennie Bell (Petty) Luce.
He was a master mechanic on both large equipment and personal vehicles.
Mickey worked for NASA during the Mercury and Apollo astronaut programs and was one of three men who had the privilege of building the flag pole placed on the moon.
He worked as equipment manager for H.B. Zachary and Sieber and Callicutt before retiring.
Hobbies he enjoyed were flying small aircraft, drag racing and building many cars with his friends. He was also a former reserve deputy with the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office and served in the U.S. Army. In the late 1950's, he was stationed in Germany where he was a Champion Golden Gloves Boxer. He was also a Mason and a member of the Scottish Rite.
Mickey was a hero, a friend and a well-respected man who truly lived up to the phrase "World's Best Father."
He was preceded in death by his wife, Joan Summerall Luce; parents, John Thomas and Jennie Bell Luce; sister, Pearl Luce Williams; and sons-in-law, Fred T. Riddle, Jr. and William Preston Berry.
He is survived by his daughter, Kristye Luce Berry of Overton; granddaughter, Jennifer Berry Nicholson and husband Andrew of Sugar Land, TX; grandson, Ronnie Fontenot and wife Krista of Lake Charles, LA; three great-granddaughters and three great-grandsons; several loving nieces, nephews and cousins. Extended family is Scott Allen and Sherry Driver, their daughter Destiny and their granddaughter, Kinsley.
Visitation will begin on Thursday, July 21, 2016, and friends are cordially invited to visit with the family from 6 to 8 o'clock in the evening at Autry Funeral Home, Jacksonville.
