Martha's Story

Text size

Martha McEwen was born to Sportswood and Ruby Madonna Hardy on October 28, 1921, in Toledo Ohio. Mom left this life on July 19, 2017. She was in her 96th year. Mom grew up in a family of nine kids; she was the middle one. She was predeceased by Al, Sport, Nell, Virginia, Chuck, Dave and Jo, all who lived to their late '80s and '90s. She is survived by her youngest sibling, Anne. Her dad was a railroad worker and her mom a dedicated domestic engineer. She grew up in a two bedroom house and the kids slept everywhere. When Mom was a sophomore at the University of Toledo, she met our dad, Richard, who usually went by Rich or Dick. They dated for about three years. Dad enlisted as a Navy officer and just days before he shipped off to the Southwest Pacific they got hitched in Providence, Rhode Island. They did not see each other again until Dad's 18-month tour was over. Meanwhile Mom worked at DuPont purchasing materials for the manufacture paint for the military. When I was a young boy I rummaged through some boxes in the attic one day and discovered a letter Dad had written to Mom while he was overseas. It was the most beautiful love letter I have ever seen. Dad obviously had Mom on a pedestal of adulation and adoration. When my sister Joellen and I were still living at home, one thing we observed every evening, when Dad came home from work, was that the first thing he would do was give her a smooch. Mom and Dad would often cuddle in front of the TV and Dad would often end out having Mom scratch his back. This went on for their 66 years of marriage until Dad's death at the age of 89. Mom was a fastidious housekeeper. On those rare occasions when she would have someone clean the house we always kidded her that she would not let the housekeeper see the house dirty. Mom was a strict parent and while it was not always easy for Sis and me to comply it did finally sink in as we became young adults; we are fortunate to have had that strictness and it has affected our ethics to this day. As a family we used to take a lot of vacations and those memories will rest with us forever. Mom is survived by her two kids, Joellen and Mike, grandkids, John, Matthew, Stephen and Chad, great grandkids, Parker, Brady, Ava, Grace and Carter. Mom's cremated remains will be buried with Dad's in a military cemetery north of Atlanta, Georgia. She will be missed.
