Ken's Story

Ken Smith, age 81, of Rusk, left his earthly home and entered the home God prepared for him on Tuesday, March 21, 2017.
Ken was born May 13, 1935 in Searcy, Arkansas to Arthur D. and Mary (Pasley) Smith. The family moved to Corpus Christi, Texas in 1951. Ken graduated from W.B. Ray High School in 1953. He was pitcher for the High School Baseball team, taking the team to play in the State Finals.
As a young man, he worked in the oil field in Mississippi. Later, he joined the ranks of the U.S. Postal Service in Corpus Christi and after several years of service, transferred to Tyler. Ken became the Post Master in Rusk in 1976. He retired in 1988 after 33 years with the Postal Service. He then worked with TDC for 9 years. He was a charter member of the Lakeview Nazarene Church in Tyler and gave many hours helping in the construction. He has been a big supporter of the Scottsville Nazarene Campground. For the past 23 years, he has been with First Baptist Church, Rusk. He has served as Chairman of the Volunteer Services at Rusk State Hospital, President of the Rusk Chamber of Commerce, and served on the Rusk City Council. Some of his most memorable and enjoyable times were spent as Reserve Deputy with the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office for 20 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and four sisters.
He is survived by spouse, Laura Westmoreland Smith of Jacksonville; son, Kenneth James Smith of Chandler; daughter, Pamela Smith Daniels and husband John of Tyler. He is also survived by two granddaughters, Kennesha Dawn Smith Yount of Tyler and Danielle Smith Clark of Lufkin; and two great-granddaughters, Brooklyn and Blakely Clark of Lufkin. Also by many nieces, nephews and a host of wonderful friends.
Pallbearers will be James Campbell, E.C. Daniels, Larry Sinclair, Leonard Craig, Tommy Bennington, and Arless Wilson.
Visitation will begin on Thursday, March 23, 2017 and friends are cordially invited to visit with Ken's family from 5 to 7 o'clock in the evening at Autry Funeral Home, Jacksonville.
A funeral service for Ken is scheduled at 10 o'clock in the morning Friday, March 24th at Autry Funeral Home Chapel in Jacksonville with Dr. Jacob Fitzgerald and Rev. Mark Hendrick officiating. He will be laid to rest at Still Waters Memorial Gardens.
