KILGORE - Funeral Services for Mr. J. Michael Edwards, 66, of Kilgore will be held 2 p.m. Monday, June 20, 2016, in the Chapel of Rader Funeral Home in Kilgore with Pastor Paul Michael Vacca and Pastor Michael Mathis officiating. J. Michael Edwards stepped into eternity while on vacation in Tucson, Arizona with the love of his life.
J. Michael was born on February 12, 1950, in San Benito, TX, to James and Thelma Edwards. His life long journey of education began in the Columbia Independent School District from which he graduated in 1968.
He then obtained his Bachelors of Education from Howard Payne University and later obtained his Master of History from the University of Texas in Arlington. He also obtained his Master of Education from Stephen F. Austin in Nacogdoches, along with these degrees, he was constantly in search of knowledge including on his final vacation.
He also loved to share his knowledge through teaching or being a principal at Arlington ISD, Jarvis Christian College, Gilmer ISD, Wharton ISD, Edgewood ISD, Angelina College, Gladewater ISD, Kilgore College and Jacksonville ISD. J. Michael also enjoyed going to the beach and fishing. He also loved reading, but most of all he loved his grandkids, "The APES." His family was the source of his strength and joy. Spending time with them was when he was happiest. He will be greatly missed by all of those whose lives he has touched.
J. Michael is survived by his wife, Jan Edwards of Kilgore; daughters, Jenna Mathis and husband Michael, Marion Collins and husband Daniel; grandchildren, "The APES", Abbigail Mathis, Preston Collins, Ethan Mathis, Sophie Collins; mother, Thelma Jean Goolsby; brothers, Terry Edwards and wife Donna, Gary Edwards and wife Ann.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 4 until 6 in the evening Sunday.
