Memorial services for Hugh Neeld, age 86 of Jacksonville are scheduled for 1:00 Friday, January 22, 2016, at the First United Methodist Church in Jacksonville with Barbara Hugghins officiating. Boren-Conner Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Mr. Neeld was born February 17, 1929 in Fort Worth and had lived in East Texas for approximately fifty years prior to his death on January 19, 2016. He served in the U.S. Navy in WWII and was wounded in the battle of Okinawa. He received his education in Fort Worth schools and graduated from Texas Christian University with a degree in broadcast journalism. After his retirement from KLTV-TV in 1994 he began writing for newspapers and magazines having received many competitive awards. He also wrote humor columns for the Jacksonville Progress, the Tyler Paper online edition and was a contributor for In Magazine. A collection of his humorous columns “The Curmudgean Report” was published in 2005. He was preceded in death by his parents, Fenner and Birdie Newsome Neeld and a daughter, Susan Fowler. Survivors include his wife of thirty four years, Cris, his daughter, Carla Szafran and her husband Paul, a son, Will Fowler, and a brother and sister-in-law, Carl and Jean Neeld of Portland, OR. Visitation will be at the First United Methodist Church at 12:30 p.m. on Friday prior to the service.
