A graveside service for Christene Smith, age 95, of Jacksonville, is scheduled at 10 o'clock in the morning Saturday, May 13, 2017 at Jarratt Cemetery with Rev. Vernon Lee officiating. Services are under the direction of Autry Funeral Home in Jacksonville.
Mrs. Smith passed away Wednesday, May 10, 2017 at her home in Jacksonville.
She was born March 5, 1922 in New Hope to Melvin and Viola (Sanford) Grimes.
Oscar Smith and Christene Grimes married Christmas Day 1941. They were together for 74 years until his death. Subsequent to Oscar's return home from the war, the couple operated Smiths Washarama and then K&N root beer stand in the 1950-60's. Chris later worked for Uniform Printing and Beall's.
Upon retiring in the early 80's, Oscar and Christene traveled the United States seeing all the lower 48 states. She was a member of First Baptist Church since 1950. Chris was also an avid Texas Rangers fan and enjoyed watching every game.
She was preceded in death by her husband Oscar; her son, Tim L. Smith and siblings, Opal, Dorothy, Jay, Dee and Cecil.
Survivors include her son, Terry Smith and wife Julie of Dallas and daughter-in-law, Julie Duren of Jacksonville. She is also survived by grandchildren, Tim L. Smith, Jr., Troy Smith, Tiffany Jacobson and husband Bradley; great-grandchildren, Christine Reiswig and husband Josh, Kelsey Dominy and husband Zach, Tyler Smith, Leah Smith, Katherine Jacobson, Anna Jacobson, Audrey Jacobson, Isaac Smith; and great-great grandchildren, Cheri Beck, Addison Reiswig and Grayson Dominy.
Visitation will begin on Friday, May 12, 2017 and friends are cordially invited to visit with the family from 6 to 8 o'clock in the evening at Autry Funeral Home, Jacksonville.
The family would like to express their gratitude and love to her caretakers over the past couple of years, Bridgette Locke, Judy Robinson, Melonye Tant and Mae Locke. They would also like to thank Heart to Heart Hospice especially Holly Pope Thompson, Lana Flannery, Amy Murphy, Tony Dennis and Eddy Secrest.
