Albert's Story

Funeral services for Albert Wesley King, 90, will be 2:00 p.m., Sunday, July 30, 2017 at Oakland Missionary Baptist Church, Oakland, TX under the direction of Wallace-Thompson Funeral Home, Rusk with Bro. Jamie Hogan officiating. Burial will follow at Oakland Cemetery.
Mr. King, known as 'Wesley' to friends and family was born on September 12, 1926 in Oakland, Texas.  
He passed away on July 27, 2017 in Frisco, Texas after a sudden illness.  He is preceded in death by his parents John Mark and Zell Roark King, 3 siblings, and his wife of 62 years, Laverne Hassell King, and his wife of 10 years, Lillian 'Pete' Sanders.  
He is survived by his two sons and daughter-in-laws, Ronald  and Anita King, and Bruce and Holly King,  5 grandchildren (Garret  King, Tamara King Thompson, Brandon King, Ray King, and Kristen King Kipling, two step grandchildren (Danielle Schumann and Alex Cook), and 13 great grandchildren.  
Albert grew up in Oakland, Texas.  He worked tomato fields as a child and played basketball in high school.  
He was a proud Marine, serving during World War II on a light cruiser in the Pacific.  He was married to Laverne Hassell for 62 years.  Wesley worked for General Motors for 60 years, most notably in dealerships in Alvin, Rusk, and Jacksonville, Texas.  He was distinguished with many awards and took great pride in his employment.  He regularly attended Baptist churches throughout his life, often serving as a Deacon.  
Albert Wesley loved basketball, dominoes, hunting, fishing, and riding his lawn mower.  In his older years, he enjoyed visiting with friends and family and eating catfish, peaches, and banana pudding.  
Most of all, Albert Wesley loved people and he thrived in the companionship of family and friends.  
He saw the best in other people and will be remembered for his energy, humor, and kindness.
Visitation will be 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Saturday, July 29, 2017 at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Garret Wesley King, Regan Allan Thompson, Stephen Douglas Thompson, Brandon King, Ray King and Tommy Knolley.
