Virginia's Story

Ninety-four years old and the last of her family, Virginia Offord was homesick for heaven, her beloved husband, Roland, her sisters, brothers and son, Hamlin. Virginia was the youngest child of Julia Jane Cole Gordon and Francis Niles Gordon of Throckmorton and Hamilton County, Texas. Born in 1923, she was a wonderful daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She spent her life teaching English, serving Central Baptisst Church and volunteering in nursing homes in East Texas. She served as an award winning state ombudsmen for nursing homes in Cherokee County. She attended U.N.T. and graduated from Stephen F. Austin State University with a B.S. and a M.Ed . She balanced family, church, work and school receiving the designations, Alpha Chi and Summa Cum Laude. She was active in Alpha Delta Kappa, D.A.R., Utile Dulce, and many other organizations. She leaves behind four grandchildren, a daughter, a son-in-law, a daughter -in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins, and great grandchildren.
