A funeral service for Tom Dement, Jr., age 83, of Jacksonville, is scheduled at 2 o'clock in the afternoon Thursday, May 26, 2016, at Autry Funeral Home Chapel in Jacksonville. Rev. David Smith, Rev. James Dorman and Rev. James Blaylock will officiate. Tom will be laid to rest at Jarratt Cemetery with Masonic Rites and military honors.
Mr. Dement passed away Sunday, May 22, 2016, at his home in Jacksonville. He was born October 5, 1932, in Sargent, Texas to Thomas and Rebecca (Bailey) Dement.
Tom was a member of the Scottish Rite and Jacksonville Masonic Lodge # 108 AF & AM. He was the recipient of a 50-year pin for Master Masons and had a Doctorate in Commissioners Science. Tom was involved in Scouting over 40 years and held the distinction of Silver Beaver.
He retired as a purchasing agent for Dow Chemical. During his time in the U. S. Navy, he served during the Korean conflict and received numerous medals: National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Navy Occupational Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, Korean Defense Service Medal, Korean Presidential Unit Citation, United Nations Service Medal and the Republic of Korea Service Medal.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his sisters, Lottie Garner, Ailene Morris, Polly Grimes and Delores Dement.
Left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife of 62 years, Shirley Dement of Jacksonville; son, Lawrence Dement and wife Shanna of Jacksonville; daughters, Dawnn Johnson and husband Greg of Sweeny and Susie Phillips and fiancé Gregory Fleming of Rusk. He is also survived by brothers and sisters-in-law, Bud and Judy Tinsley, Bob and Betty Tinsley; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Honored to serve as pallbearers will be his grandsons and nephews.
Visitation will begin on Thursday, May 26, 2016, and friends are cordially invited to visit with the family from noon to 2 o'clock in the afternoon at Autry Funeral Home, Jacksonville.
