Peggy's Story

Peggy Jane (Blackburn, McLeroy) Burns passed away on Tuesday, December 12, 2017 in Jacksonville at the age of 85. Peggy was born in Hunt County near Commerce on February 22, 1932 and moved to Grand Prairie in 1942 for her father to work in the defense plant during WWII.
She graduated from Grand Prairie High School in 1948. In 1950, she married V.L. "Blondie" McLeroy and they had 3 children, They were transferred by Mobil Oil Co. to Jacksonville in 1958. "Blondie" passed away in 1999.
Peggy attended Lon Morris College in Jacksonville, Texas and Stephen F. Austin University in Nacogdoches where she received a Master's Degree in Elementary Education. She taught "special children" both in Frankston ISD and Jacksonville ISD for 39 years.
In 2001, she was reunited with a dear friend, and in 2003 she and Robert Burns were married. They enjoyed many "car trips", sightseeing in the mountains of Kentucky, Tennessee, New Mexico and other states. They loved going to their deer lease and spending time on the ranch in their travel trailer. Their best times were sitting in their recliners at home cheering on the Texas Rangers.
She was a charter member of both the Southside Church of Christ and Jacksonville Church of Christ and Delta Kappa Gamma sorority in Frankston, Texas.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, V.L. "Blondie" McLeroy; her parents, N.A. and Mary Sims Blackburn; brother, James Blackburn and his wife JoAnn Ballard Blackburn; sons-in-law, Bobby Willis and
Joe Vega.
Left to cherish her memory is her husband, Robert Burns; her children, Jackie McLeroy and Roger Warren, Joni Vega, Tony McLeroy and wife Sheryl; grandchildren, Lori McLeod Baxter, Jeff Gray and wife Victoria, Carrie McLeroy and Nick, Katie McLeroy and Chad McKinney and David Warren. Great-grandchildren are Brittney Baxter, Bailey Baxter, Brianna Baxter, Keely Gray and Gentry Gray. She is also survived by a host of wonderful friends that brought her much happiness and laughter and whom she never forgot.
A visitation will begin on Thursday, December 14, 2017 and friends are cordially invited to visit with Peggy's family from 6 to 8 o'clock in the evening at Autry Funeral Home, Jacksonville. A graveside service is scheduled at 10 o'clock in the morning Friday, December 15, 2017 at Resthaven Memorial Park in Jacksonville with Rev. Dale Varnon officiating. Services are under the direction of Autry Funeral Home in Jacksonville.
Honorary pallbearers are Edward Bruce, Lyndon "Hoke" Holmes, John Jeffries, Cary Lupton, Daniel New, Frank Setzler and Jerry Worley.
