A funeral service for Oakley Newton, age 98, of Jacksonville, is scheduled at 2 o'clock in the afternoon Sunday, September 18, 2016 at Autry Funeral Home Chapel in Jacksonville with Rev. Grady Higgs and Rev. Robert Simpson officiating. He will be laid to rest at Resthaven Memorial Park in Jacksonville.
Mr. Newton passed away Wednesday, September 14, 2016 in Tyler.
Oakley was born October 6, 1917 in Cherokee County, Texas to Henry and Mozelle (Casey) Newton.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He retired from Auto Convoy before working at Cherokee Hardware and he was a locksmith. Oakley was a Shriner and a 32nd degree Mason.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Irene Newton and two brothers, Wayne and Dewey Newton.
Left to cherish his memory is his daughter, Ginny Sanders and husband Davy of Jacksonville; grandchildren, Angela Leichliter and husband Jon, Allison Sanders and Alex Sanders. There are two great-grandchildren, Justin and Chloe Leichliter; and several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Alex Sanders, Les Johnson, Dick Turner, John Prewitt, Dan Childs, Jon Leichliter and Andy McCown.
Visitation will begin on Saturday, September 17, 2016 and friends are cordially invited to visit with the family from 5 to 7 o'clock in the evening at Autry Funeral Home, Jacksonville.
