Neta Wagstaff Hanna


Neta Wagstaff Hanna was born August 22, 1923 in Shelby County, Texas to the late Richard and Lula (Permenter) Wagstaff. She passed away Monday, April 29, 2019 in Jacksonville.
Mrs. Hanna dedicated 40 years to teaching. She began her career teaching elementary students in Orange, Freeport and then taught for 6 years at Joe Wright Elementary in Jacksonville. In 1958, Mrs. Hanna moved to the high school where she taught physical education and served as cheerleader sponsor for 28 years. She will always be remembered for saying "Why work when you can play". She served on the Board of Directors of the Jacksonville Education Foundation and lent much support to education in Jacksonville. Neta was named by her family and close friends as an Influential Indian in 2012. Because of her life-long interest in athletics, she was a charter member of the Jacksonville Tennis Association and inducted to the JTA Hall of Fame in 2005. She was a long-time member of Corinth Road Church of Christ.
She was preceded in death by her husband Roy Hanna in 1983; daughter, Christi Spradley; grandson, Dr. Chris Spradley; four brothers and four sisters.
Left to cherish her memory are her son and daughter-in-law, David and Becky Hanna of Jacksonville. Grandchildren and spouses are Matt and Kelly Spradley of Frisco, Justin and Kaley Hanna of Dallas and Dylan and Briana Hanna of Jacksonville. She is also survived by great-grandchildren, Parker, Tucker and Jaque Spradley and Avery and Landree Hanna; and several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Dylan Hanna, Justin Hanna, Matt Spradley, Tucker Spradley, Mark Wagstaff and Preston Smith. Honorary pallbearers are James Cunningham, Larry Garner, Ronnie O'Dell, Kent Westbrook, Frank Dublin, Tim McRae, Mike Hopson, Stan Smith, and the 1958-1986 Jacksonville Cheerleaders.
Visitation will begin on Thursday, May 2, 2019 and friends are cordially invited to visit with the Hanna family from 6 to 7 o'clock in the evening at Autry Funeral Home, Jacksonville.
A funeral service is scheduled at 2 o'clock in the afternoon, Friday, May 3, 2019 at Autry Funeral Home Chapel in Jacksonville. Mrs. Hanna will be laid to rest at Resthaven Memorial Park in Jacksonville.

Mrs. Hanna was my PE teacher, 1070-1971. She was sweet and fun. Prayers for her family.
