Nancy's Story

Funeral services for Nancy McKean, of Rusk, are scheduled for 10:00 am Saturday, July 15, 2017 at the First United Methodist Church in Rusk with the Reverend Bart Reddoch officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.
Mrs. McKean passed away Tuesday, July the 11th, at her residence. She was preceded in death by her parents, Gilbert and Ruth Brewer; her two brothers, Gilbert and David Brewer; and her sister, Diana Duncan. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Hugh McKean of Rusk; a niece, Darlene Myers and husband David of Rusk; and a nephew, Robert Duncan and wife Gina of Denver, Colorado.
Nancy was employed by Citizens 1st Bank for over 40 years, where she served as Executive Vice President, Bank Director, and Secretary of the Board. She was one of the first female directors in the bank's 97 year history to serve without being related to the Perkins family. Her outstanding work and leadership helped the bank grow from $40 million in assets and $6 million in capital in one location, to $800 million in assets and $155 million in capital with 4 locations. Throughout her employment, Nancy served as administrative assistant in a broad civil law practice including assisting in the preparation of hundreds of documents. Nancy loved Rusk and was active in numerous civic and religious activities. She served on the Volunteer Council of the Rusk State Hospital, was a member of the Rusk Chamber of Commerce, and served on the Board of Trustees, Finance Committee, and Chancel Choir of the First United Methodist Church of Rusk. Because of splendid community service the Nancy McKean Rusk High School/Tyler Junior College scholarship program was created in her honor. Nancy received the coveted and highly respected 2012 Outstanding Texan Award.
Originally from Florida, Nancy was a graduate of St. Petersburg High School and Tomlinson School of Business. She moved to Houston upon her marriage and was employed by Stone (Red) Wells in the Public Affairs Division of Tenneco, the New York Stock Exchange billion dollar conglomerate. After living in Houston 13 years, she and her husband Hugh moved to Rusk. The McKean's are ranchers and have a long time beef cattle and hay operation on their property. Hugh is an economist and worked with Signal Oil & Gas and was employed by the United States Postal Service.
Pallbearers will include Charles Hassell, James Perkins, Jr, Jerry Fonville, Rick Harrison, James Sexton, Randy Grooms, Johnny Patrick, Gary Epperson, and Robert Harder. Honorary pallbearers will be Cory Beasley, John Birkelbach, Andy Brown, Kay Epperson, Laura Perkins Fonville, Leslie Hassell, Kim Luna, Senator Robert Lee Nichols, Margaret Perkins, Chris Sidnell, Honorable Todd Staples, and Jeanie Swink.
Visitation for Nancy will be from 6:00 p.m.to 8:00 p.m., Friday, July 14, 2017 at Wallace-Thompson Funeral Home. If desired memorials may be made to Hospice of East Texas, 4111 University Blvd Tyler, TX 75701 and Visiting Angels, 419 W Houston St. Tyler, TX 75702.
