Mary Gwendolyn Wood, of Halbert, 92, of Conroe, Texas lost her battle with cancer at 3:30 a.m. on April 6, 2017 in Cleveland, Texas. Gwen was born April 19, 1924 in Rusk, Texas to Leonard Penn Halbert and Mary Ida Johnston Halbert. Gwen is survived by her daughters Aline Coleman, Linda Burney, Jewel Carter and husband John, Judy Thompson and husband Gary, and daughter-in-law Theresa Wood, and their many children and grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband of 55 years CJ Wood, her sons Johnny Mack and Darral Penn, grandchildren Johnny Lee Carter, Gregory Dean Thompson and Kayla Dianne Parrin, and sons-in-law George Coleman and Donald Burney.
Visitation for Gwen will be held at Wallace-Thompson Funeral Home in Rusk, Texas on April 9, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. Services will begin at 2:30 p.m. with Rev. Don Copeland officiating. Burial will follow at Oakland Cemetery. Pallbearers will include Bryan O'Steen, Carter Goyen, Zane Drake, Taylor Thompson, Nicholas Anderson and Kyle Parrin. Honorary pallbearers will be Reed Drake, Zachary Thompson, Matthew Ellis and Zachary Ellis.
Gwen was a beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, and grandmother. She was an avid reader and gardener, enjoyed spending time with her large family over splendid dinners, and quilting. May the fruits of her remarkable work warm those she leaves behind, be a comfort to them and a beautiful reminder of her calm, constant spirit for all the precious years to come.
