Martha's Story

Martha Nielsen, 106, of Jacksonville, TX passed away on Monday, February 1, 2016 at the home of her son and daughter-in-law in Jacksonville, TX. She will always be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother and friend of all that knew and loved her. She was born in Winnfield, LA on August 11, 1909 to Peter Crawford and Neva Pearl Moseley. She attended college in Lafayette, LA before attending and graduating from Washington University in St. Louis, MO. After working in LA for a while, she went to work for Federal Reserve Bank in Little Rock, AR. There she met and married Richard R. Nielsen. They were transferred to Dallas, TX in 1942. She worked from home while her children were young. Later she worked at the library at SMU, then as a secretary and teacher for Armstrong Elementary School in Highland Park. She loved being with her family and friends, and all sorts of social activities. She enjoyed the activities of the senior adults in the Highland Park United Methodist Church. Reading was one of her favorite hobbies. She moved to Jacksonville with her son in 2005. She will be missed by the many friends she has made at First United Methodist Church and the Major Thaddeus Beall Chapter, NSDAR in Jacksonville. Survivors include her sons Richard Jr. and his wife Billie Nielsen of Jacksonville, TX; William and his wife Sung Yon of Safety Harbor, FL; daughters Donna Collins of Merriam, KS; Marcia and husband Fred LaMar of Lenexa, KS.; 4 granddaughters; 3 grandsons; 4 great granddaughters; and 3 great grandsons; cousin, Burton Williams, Jr. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband. Visitation with the family was held from 6:00 – 8:00 pm Friday, February 5, 2016. A memorial service will be held at Cox Chapel, Highland Park United Methodist Church Saturday, February 6, 2016 at 11:00 AM. Burial will follow in Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery.
