A funeral service for Jess Overton Martin, age 92, of New Summerfield, is scheduled for 2 o'clock in the afternoon Sunday, April 17, 2016 at Autry Funeral Home Chapel in Jacksonville with Rev. Andy Cox and
Rev. D. L. Stewart officiating. He will be laid to rest at Concord Cemetery
Jess passed away Thursday April 14, 2016 in Jacksonville.
He was born April 6, 1924 in Concord weighing less than three pounds. Dr. Overton said Jess wouldn't live over three days. The family always gave credit to two aunts, that stayed and rubbed oil on him day and night, for his life. He was named by his doctor.
Mr. Martin grew up in Concord and attended Cumberland Presbyterian church. He met his wife, Pansy Ruth Tennison and was married for 69 years.
Jess fought in WWII with the Merchant Marines. Once back home, he owned and operated a Texaco station in New Summerfield. After selling the station, he delivered butane to many customers in the area until he retired. Jess raised and sold cattle until the age of 87 and was cutting, bailing and selling hay until he was 90.
Mr. Martin was a member of the Masonic lodge and was a Shriner.
He was preceded in death by his wife Pansy Martin, son Barry Max Martin and parents Ross and Ada Martin, brothers Rade McCollum, Obie Martin, sister Joan Holcomb.
Left to cherish his memory is his daughter Sandra Kay Lewis and husband Nolan of Longview, grandchildren; Jess A. Martin and wife Kara, Angie Capps and husband Tim, Chris Lewis and wife Amy, Great-grandchildren; Seth Martin and wife Kayla, Darby Bogdanich and husband Jake, Bryanah Capps, Brennan Lewis, Chance Lewis, Great-great-grandchildren; Kynzlie Martin and Mason Martin.
Pallbearers will be: Jess A, Martin, Chris Lewis, Seth Martin, Tim Capps, Phil Waldrup and Johnny Mack Tennison.
Honorary pallbearers will be: Nolan Lewis, Byron Underwood, Ricky Brown and Graham Tennison.
The family extends a special thanks to Senior Care, of Jacksonville and Heart to Heart Hospice.
Visitation will begin on Sunday April 17, 2016 from 1 P.M. until service time at Autry Funeral Home, Jacksonville.
