CUSHING - H.L. "Nick" Nichols, Jr. of La Porte was born August 20, 1943 in Nacogdoches to Herbert L. and Vera Whitaker Nichols. He attended Lilbert School for the first four years then attended Cushing School where he participated in football, basketball, and baseball. Nick graduated in 1961 from Cushing High School. He attended Blinn Junior College and pitched for the Buccaneers baseball team. Nick worked at Rusk State Hospital and attended Henderson County Junior College (Now Trinity Valley) graduating with an Associates degree in 1966. He worked at NIBCO in Nacogdoches until 1976 when he moved to Houston. He worked for Diamond Shamrock, later named OxyChem. He retired as a head operator in 2011.
Nick's interests included sports - especially football, basketball, baseball, golf, and ice hockey. He was an avid sports statistics and trivia buff and a huge Dallas Cowboys fan. He loved genealogy, researching his family tree and traveling to several states in search of family information. Nick accepted Christ as his Savior when he was 12 years old. He was baptized in the family pond built by his grandfather.
Nick passed away on Thursday, February 2, 2017 in Houston, Texas. He is preceded in death by his wife of 38 years Cynthia Woolbright Nichols. He is survived by his parents Herbert and Vera Nichols of Cushing, daughters and sons-in-law Tammy and Randy Rasberry of Rusk and Kristol and Jason Biaza of LaPorte, sons and daughters-in-law Terry and Leslie Nichols of Nacogdoches, Ron and Amy Nichols of Cushing, and Bryan Nichols of LaPorte, sisters and brothers-in-law Linda Nichols and Lisa and Glenn Heath all of Cushing. He is also survived by grandchildren Alyssa and Ryan Massingill, Aaron and Megan Nichols, Austin Rasberry, Taylor Nichols, Andrew Nichols, Riley Nichols, Lexie Nichols, and Benjamin Nichols, step-grandchildren Danielle Simmons and Blake Simmons. Nephews and nieces include Seth Pounds, Blake and Breanne Heath, Briley Heath, and Bethanie Heath.
Funeral services for Nick Nichols will be at 2pm Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2017, at Dickie Allen Funeral Home in Cushing with Rev. Don Copeland, Rev. Tim Alexander, and Pastor Sally Couvillion officiating. Burial will be in Friendship Cemetery in Nacogdoches County.
