Dorothy was born in Fairfield, Iowa and was 89 when she was called to heaven. She lived her life to the fullest, traveling all over the world, working in a variety of jobs, while raising three daughters. She always had a close relationship with her family members, sisters Betty Kinion and Evelyn Hartung, and brothers Junior and John McMurray. She was the last surviving sibling.
Dorothy had many wonderful talents. She had a beautiful voice and sang in numerous choirs through the years. Sewing using designer patterns was a passion of hers. She made one-of-a-kind party dresses, Prom dresses, and pants outfits for all three of her daughters, Linda Flores, Robin Walton, and La Retta Britton.
Dorothy served for years as the Wedding Guild Director for the Presbyterian Church in Salinas, California. She created beautiful wedding cakes, the largest of which was for 250 people. Her specialty was a many-tiered carrot cake, which she made for her daughter La Retta's wedding in 1985. She was blessed with many amazing talents.
Dorothy and Robert Barr, her husband of 49 years, followed her daughter, La Retta, and her husband Jim Britton for 32 years as they moved from north to south, west to east, and back again. They all moved to east Texas in 2005 where they shared a large, comfortable home just outside of Rusk on US Hwy 84. Robert passed away in 2008. The team of "Bob and Dottie" created a lot of memories for the "Whataburger" staff as they were regulars for lunch. They both attended Rusk First United Methodist Church where they made wonderful friends.
I enjoyed and loved my mother for 62 years. She will be greatly missed. God needed another angel! Goodbye for now Momma. La Retta Britton
A Memorial Service will be held at the Rusk First United Methodist Church on October 21st, 2017 at 11:00 am.
