Funeral services for Derrell Wayne "Gramps" Gilbert, age 75, of Jacksonville, are scheduled at 2 o'clock in the afternoon Friday, March 18, 2016, at Autry Funeral Home Chapel in Jacksonville with Bro. David Hallum officiating. He will be laid to rest at Vinson Cemetery.
Mr. Gilbert passed away Monday, March 14, 2016, at his home in his garden, one of his favorite places.
He was born December 2, 1940, in Waco, Texas to Emory and Edna (Williams) Gilbert.
Derrell was a Texas A&M graduate class of 1964 and everything about him was an Aggie. He worked as an accountant for 20 years with Lone Star Industries, Inc. of Dallas and during his retirement he worked for Walmart. He was member of Afton Grove Baptist Church where he proudly served as a deacon. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. Since the birth of his 1st grandson he has been known as "Gramps" and will be truly missed by all.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Derek Gilbert; and brother and sister-in-law, Charles and Jimmie Gilbert.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Charlotte Gilbert of Jacksonville; daughter, Kelly Fowler and husband Cory of Jacksonville; son, Daniel Adelstein and wife Vicky of Florida; a brother, Kenneth Gilbert and wife Sandra; sister-in-law, Annette Burch; grandchildren, Morgan Birdwell, Alec Gilbert, Brittney and Kyra Adelstein; great-grandchildren, Emma and Ryley Birdwell; lifelong friends, Bobby and Suzanne Joyce; and several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Morgan Birdwell, Ul Minter, Brad Joyce, Jeff Joyce, J.C. Cook, Jeff Taylor, Shawn Burch and Eric Burch.
Honorary pallbearers Alec Gilbert, Bobby Joyce, Glen Whipper, Alton Napps, and all the Deacons of Afton Grove Baptist Church.
Visitation will begin on Thursday, March 17, 2016, and friends are cordially invited to visit with the family from 6 to 8 o'clock in the evening at Autry Funeral Home, Jacksonville.
